This afternoon we held our get together... perfect size for the first. sort of a meeting of the woodworking forums.. In addition to myself in attendance representing the 207 Jared "jneerhof", Issac (hosted) and NancyK from Woodnet, and
Roper from LumberJocks
Isaac on the left and Jared on the right going over the Sharpening HandoutJared brought down his recently completed Cherry Step Stool project and a number of acquired hand planes to show and discuss. Roper has fallen off the slippery slope into Lathe land, basically moved away from flat furniture projects to working exclusively turning. He brought along a bunch of hollow forms and bowl projects to show and discuss. NancyK brought along a few of her recent eBay/antique shope/flea market tools finds to find more information about and to show the bunch.
Besides a BBQ, snacking and beverages to keep hydrated in the wicket summer heat.. there was a lot of information and stories exchanged. Where people buy their lumber, find their tools, the projects underway now and projects in the planning.
Isaac is measuring the saw blade to determine the set.Isaac for the main event really put together a great packet of information about everything you would ever need to know about handsaws.. How to sharpen for the various types of cuts, covering TPI and depth.. super informative and really an eye opener how saws work, the tools to tune them up (saw vise, saw set, sharpening files) and how they really can be tailored to the type of cut (crosscut/rip), type of wood (hardwood/softwood), moisture content and thickness of the stock (thick/thin) you will be cutting. Isaac did a demo today taking an old rip saw blade off a Disston back saw, grinding the teeth off, jointing it smooth w/ a bastard file, indexing off a 12 TPI pattern he filed new teeth and added set to every other tooth on a side. It would still take me a little trial and error but I feel pretty confident that knowing what I learned today I could joint the teeth off a blade and do an adequate jobs sharpening it on my own and know that it would cut better than most off the shelf models on the market.
This little beauty is one of Isaac's hand made saws. The handle is made out of Apple wood and has amazing details. It was great to meet everyone and a neat opportunity to identify with a group of folks with the same passions and desire to push their woodworking to the next level.
I'll post some pictures tomorrow.
Thanks again everyone for a great afternoon, I'll send out an email with some tentative dates for our next meeting in August.
BTW, Happy Birthday Paul! I hope you have an amazing day.. it would have been great if you could have joined us too! But I'm sure you had a relaxing day being treated like a King by the Misses.
Jared,
I'm really glad you could make it down, it was a fun time today.. besides the heat..

Isaac was a great host and really knows his stuff about hand saws, supper informative session.. and talk about saw related tools and gadgets.. well to be honest.. talk about a garage full of 'anything woodworking related' tools, lumber and gadgets.
