Got it started today. The case will be Hickory with Hickory dividers and Walnut drawer fronts. Secondary will be Poplar. Got the case sides rough milled and stickered today. Can't wait to move on tomorrow. I am going to do some rough milling for the drawer fronts, so I can move back to the case either late tomorrow or on Monday. I will post some in-progress pics, but please be advised..... All info will be kinda vague as Tommy is running a business and I'm not trying to give away his secrets and dimensions etc. For those lurkers of you out there, BUY THE VIDEO!!! It is awesome and well worth your time and money. I will post some pics tomorrow. For those of you in the know, my case will have slightly different dimensions than Tommy's as I do not have access to the incredible stock that he does. I am still extremely satisfied with where my limitations will leave me!

Man, what took you so long to get started? I eagerly await seeing some teaser pics of your progress and, of course, the final product. Have fun building it. I have a few other 'family commissioned' projects to clear through the shop before I can start on mine, but at least I have the DVD and the wood.

Have a Happy Holiday.

Rat.

Here are some pics from this weekend. My son is home from school with a rash today, so I might actually get a little more done. Wish me luck.

Adam,

Looking forward to seeing it come together. Looks like you have some fun on your hands.

And good luck with the whole "son has a rash" thing. I sometimes think that I can get a lot done when I am home with the kids, and in the end I get nothing done. But then again, sometimes it works.

Happy chopping. Cal

Hand planed the face and edge of the Walnut, then ran it through the planer to bring to just over final. Brought the Hickory down to final so I can do the glue up soon. Had to work late so nothing got done today. This week looks like long one so not sure if much will get done before the weekend. Hopefully I can get some glue ups done before then, so I can bring to final width and length and begin dovetails. I can't wait to so the spring joints. I love hand planing and that will be a new trick. WIsh me luck.

That hickory is gorgeous! How hard is it to work by hand?

VERY HARD!!! When I'm doing dovetails with my chisels, I have to re-sharpen every tail and a half or so  . It's like hitting a rock. But I think it will be great for this chest. It does look great though. The contrasting heart and sap and the wave in the grain are going to make for an awesome project. Sorry I haven't posted any progress lately, It's been busy around here and I haven't gotten very much done. Hopefully this coming weekend I'll make more progress.

Sorry I haven't posted lately, but with the temps in the 40's, nothing is getting done in my screened in porch shop. As soon as I make any progress though, I will post. Hope you are all having a great day. Chop-Chop (shiver-shiver).

What I do in a situation like this is use a piece of leather attached to board thats clamped to the bench. Using LN or green (micro fine grit) rouge I lap the chisel 3-4 times and it puts a nice edge on it and your good to go for a couple of more tails. Also what kind of chisels do you use? It might be a lesser quality of steel.

My set is Stanley, but for most of my DT's, I use my LN's. I only have 2, but they are my primary's for the good stuff. The Stanley's definitely go quicker than the LN, but they both go waaaaaaaay to fast. Thanks for the green rouge tip. I'll have to give it a try.

I use the "scary sharp' method and keep some 2000 grit sand paper handy. I have a few of the "swiss made" bench chisels I use on dovetails and the sand paper does a good job.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

From what I can tell from your box pic, it looks like you did a good job with the DT's. Any issues we can't see? I know I try to hide mine when possible.

Bruce

Bruce,
Issues??...let's just say that all the dovetails weren't all perfect. ;)

I do think I'll be adding a upper moulding and some "feet", ie spice box to protect the corners. I plan on making it so I can take it to SAPFM meetings, or similar events. Hopefully this week I'll be taking it apart and adding the dados to the sides.

I do like to use the chaulk....

Dave

Tpod, that's looking great. With the case made from hickory it will be a durable one for sure.

At one time in this market hickory became really popular for cabinets. It wasn't too bad to work with but raising panels for doors and such took multiple passes vs a single run for say oak or cherry.

Good luck with it, you're doing very well thus far! :)

Rick

Dave,

After you grind those LNs a couple of times you'll get into better steel and they will hold a better edge. Also, a 30* microbevel will help. A2 tends to roll up at 25*.

Thanks for the interest! When I finished the chest. I added another thread called "another T-chisel inspired tool chest" in the "Team 207-Showcase your work" section on the site. Definitely one of the most valued items in my shop.

Thanks,
Dave
