Encouraged by Tommy to build the Blanket Chest I had to get started on one for my daughter. After receiving the DVD with Plans, I noticed that the front pattern or beading bit information was not included in the PDF instruction file. For those encouraged to make an exact copy and follow through with Tommy's instruction, that information is critical, otherwise why purchase the plans when all else can be gleened from the show video. Will that information and pattern be made available?

However this is behind the pay-wall at Fine Woodworking. At one time they offered a free 14-day trial on-line subscription. Worth checking into.

Option #2, make your own design.

The Blanket chest is in the Feb.2011 edition of "Fine Woodworking" magazine. They have a pattern for the carving that must be enlarged by 125% for full-sized templet.
They suggest using a Whiteside 10-382 beading bit on the legs, rails, and stiles. Hope this info helps. :D

Thanks EVERYBODY. Luckily it will be a few weeks before I would use the pattern, but thanks especially for the Lightning response. This is a GREAT Forum and website. Thanks All.

I purchased the DVD and plans for the Blanket Chest through the PBS Store. Unfortunately the plans do not contain the carving pattern for the front panels. Where can I get the carving pattern that is used on the DVD?

Ok, I have the pattern, but one question. Tommy said he made the pattern to be used with certain chisels and gouges that correspond to certain cuts. Is that listed anywhere?

Love the show!

Thanks,

It may be listed or mentioned in the old pod casts.

If you don't already have the chisels/gouges AND you plan to get them at a Woodcraft store, just take the pattern along. Then you can figure out which sweeps you need. Should only take 3 or 4.

While I didn't use the tulip pattern for mine, I did take my pattern with me to the store.

If you are buying on-line, see if you can find a catalog list of the gouge sweeps with cooresponding diagrams to print out. You may need to fiddle a bit with your printer settings to get the scale right. Usually the second number gives width in mm, so a 5/20 would be a #5 sweep 20mm wide. That will help you scale the printout.

Really, I just worried about the inside curves when sizing the gouges. Did most of the outside curve cleanup with a straight chisel. Once you get the background stippled, the wax applied and view it by candle-light it will be fine! :)

For giggles, before I started in on my finished panels, I made a couple practice ones in red oak instead of white. Cheaper and I could hack away with no worries.

So maybe plan on at least one extra panel worth of white oak.
