This is the time I remember the Essex Scots that lead the Dieppe raid. The entire regiment hit the beach. 17 of them made it home.
This was the worst day in my regiment's history.
Let us pray it is never to happen again.
Nobody hates war more than the soldier. He is the one who must place his imperfect body between his country and its enemies. His is the job of fighting when war happens, declared or not.
Today we are shocked by casualty figures from the middle east. Few here are old enough to remember when the casualty notices in the newspapers too pages every day. Thank the Almighty Carpenter for that. Pray that never again is mankind insane enough to allow such a conflict to develop.
As an ex member of my country's armed forces who wore its uniforms in one way or another for over 3 decades, I pray for a day when soldiers are no longer necessary. I doubt I will live to see it, but I pray for it just the same.
