Well, here's my 2¢ worth ---
a slight mod to the Shaker style, maybe increase the angle of the taper in the back and put one on the front, too. I think it looks good and increases stability from a practical standpoint.

Have a look at this rough sketch.

I don't know if it's a good idea, but maybe the sides could be splayed a bit, too, which would certainly make for interesting angled dovetails, no? Pardon the poor sketch.

Of course, it would help if I actually made one of these things! Thanks, again, Tommy, for the DVD. (The shop is almost straightened up, so I can start soon!)

I like your MOD. The sloped front has good eye appeal and will add to the stability of the stool.

If someone tried the splayed legs, maybe a centered stretcher, vertically below the front of the top step with a through tenon...? I've got it on paper, but haven't got a picture.
I don't know if the two mods could go together or not, but eventually I'll try it.
