Date: Saturday - June 26th, 2010
Time: 12-5pm
Where: Aurora, CO

Right now it looks like it will be a small gathering (5-10 guys) with Jneerhof and myself representing the 207.
If anyone is interested in attending, send me a PM for additional details.

This is the proposed agenda:
12-1 PM - Sales/Swap/Look & Chat
  • Meet and Greet
  • Bring tools, wood you would like to sell/trade or just find information about

1-2 PM - Show & Tell
  • Bring recent/current projects
  • Discuss projects you would like to build

2-4:30 PM - Saws, Saws, Saws..
  • Discuss different types of saws, tooth configuration, uses
  • Sharpening: going over the basics.. set, angle.. etc... pattern (we should have enough saw vises/files for everyone to get their hands dirty)
  • Try out other saws (everyone bring your favorite/not-so favorite saws)

4:30-5 PM - Where do we want to take this
  • Discuss next meeting: date, time, agenda, host
  • Should we look at bringing in guest speakers?

As for food and drink, the host will be providing a BBQ, hot dogs and a few desserts. We can coordinate each bringing chips, refreshments.. etc.

Hopefully this is the start of what will turn out to be an informative quarterly or monthly gathering.

I'll be 64 and I like cherry cake with cherry icing and a thick layer of chocolate fudge in the middle...

Scott,
I'm really looking forward to meeting a bunch of people that share the same passion, gaining new knowledge, and just hanging out. I'll PM you with a few additional questions. Thanks so much for getting this organized! I know that it's challenging setting everything up while working 40+ a week. Can't wait!

Well, my extreme thanks to Scott (Swedish Iron) for organizing a successful first 207 Rough Cut Colorado meeting.
It was an awesome afternoon of meeting new people, talking tools, projects, methodology, eating good food, and learning new things. I personally learned a ton about handsaws: how to sharpen, different styles, new terminology: rake, set, difference between crosscut/rip.
Sharpening saws is an entire world of its own, and one that I might spend a whole lot of time and money getting into!
Special thanks to Scott's friend Isaac for hosting and demoing the saw sharpening. This guy is extremely into hand saws. He even had one he had built that I got to try on some maple, cut like butter. The coolest part of it was the applewood handle, super beautiful.
If you have a local chapter of the 207 in your area, I highly recommend joining and sharing in an awesome opportunity to learn, share, and get to know new people.

This afternoon we held our get together... perfect size for the first. sort of a meeting of the woodworking forums.. In addition to myself in attendance representing the 207 Jared "jneerhof", Issac (hosted) and NancyK from Woodnet, and Roper from LumberJocks

Image
Isaac on the left and Jared on the right going over the Sharpening Handout

Jared brought down his recently completed Cherry Step Stool project and a number of acquired hand planes to show and discuss. Roper has fallen off the slippery slope into Lathe land, basically moved away from flat furniture projects to working exclusively turning. He brought along a bunch of hollow forms and bowl projects to show and discuss. NancyK brought along a few of her recent eBay/antique shope/flea market tools finds to find more information about and to show the bunch.

Besides a BBQ, snacking and beverages to keep hydrated in the wicket summer heat.. there was a lot of information and stories exchanged. Where people buy their lumber, find their tools, the projects underway now and projects in the planning.

Image
Isaac is measuring the saw blade to determine the set.

Isaac for the main event really put together a great packet of information about everything you would ever need to know about handsaws.. How to sharpen for the various types of cuts, covering TPI and depth.. super informative and really an eye opener how saws work, the tools to tune them up (saw vise, saw set, sharpening files) and how they really can be tailored to the type of cut (crosscut/rip), type of wood (hardwood/softwood), moisture content and thickness of the stock (thick/thin) you will be cutting. Isaac did a demo today taking an old rip saw blade off a Disston back saw, grinding the teeth off, jointing it smooth w/ a bastard file, indexing off a 12 TPI pattern he filed new teeth and added set to every other tooth on a side. It would still take me a little trial and error but I feel pretty confident that knowing what I learned today I could joint the teeth off a blade and do an adequate jobs sharpening it on my own and know that it would cut better than most off the shelf models on the market.

This little beauty is one of Isaac's hand made saws. The handle is made out of Apple wood and has amazing details.

It was great to meet everyone and a neat opportunity to identify with a group of folks with the same passions and desire to push their woodworking to the next level.

I'll post some pictures tomorrow.
Thanks again everyone for a great afternoon, I'll send out an email with some tentative dates for our next meeting in August.

BTW, Happy Birthday Paul! I hope you have an amazing day.. it would have been great if you could have joined us too! But I'm sure you had a relaxing day being treated like a King by the Misses. ;)

Jared,
I'm really glad you could make it down, it was a fun time today.. besides the heat.. :( Isaac was a great host and really knows his stuff about hand saws, supper informative session.. and talk about saw related tools and gadgets.. well to be honest.. talk about a garage full of 'anything woodworking related' tools, lumber and gadgets. :)

Howdy all.

Swedishiron said the missus was treating me like a king today. Sorry, but that's nothing unusual. We treat each other like that EVERY DAY! That's why we've been together 36 years come the 27th of next month and STILL haven't had our first fight! A lot of people have a hard time believiing that, which I think is sad... We see no reason to ever HAVE one.
She bought me a nice bouquet of flowers (yes, I like flowers) and we're having barbecued T-bones for dinner tomorrow as we had company this evening and there wasn't time for a leasurely steak dinner, so pizza filled in nicely. As for a gift, the lathe I picked up recently more than fills the bill.
As I have said in the past a number of times, mrs Tiny gas one redeaming quality: she puts up with ME! What more can we ask?
May you all be as happy in your relationships as mrs Tiny and I are in ours!

Paul
the happily married little guy (who's a year older now)

Wow! Sounds like a great day. We were still in Minnesota in June, but we're new Coloradans now.

Does the group still meet? Have you set up a regular gig? I'd love to get together with a local woodworking tribe.

I was in Albuquerque, NM for 26 years and was a member of the Albuquerque Woodworkers Association, and really enjoyed it.

Do you guys have a contact list or website?
