Looks like chaos but it's organised ;)
Just French polishing the middle box although I have to stain the base and the cutlery deck. I have the ebony lipping on the boxes and am presently doing the cock beaded lipping on the two lids. It's getting there, but still busy with off site work.

Cheers
Michael

I forgot to mention I came across this picture of an original box on the net and it shows some interesting features that say something about how it was made. Looks like it has had some bad repairs over the years though. The excess of veneer below the box opening suggests the lid has been cut from the whole box in the process of making. Good to see some actual confirmation to back up how I have made mine. Perhaps the boards were actually veneered even before they were glued up into a box. That is what would do if I ever make another. Some boards have grain running vertically and some horizontally, I reckon those huge glue blocks are a hint that that probably wasn't a long lasting arrangement.

I got our knife box finished today (I think). This box has silver ash (Australian native) stringing and lipping and when I tried a mahogany base it just looked wrong so I went with a silver ash cock bead on the base instead. I think the overall result is not too bad and gives it a feminine touch. Oh just remembered that I have to add baize to the base and fit the escutcheon pins to the hinges. I'm also toying with the idea of darkening the knife deck a little more and perhaps adding silver ash stringing to it too, it is a little bland at the moment. The other two knife boxes are in the background and are awaiting grain filler and finishing and making a couple of blank knife decks. So, nearly there!

Thanks for looking.
Cheers
Michael

Gentlemen! Thank you! I'll post the pics of the other two when they are done and a link to an external site with the complete WIP.

Cheers

Blank knife decks cut out and awaiting a stain. The bases were that light colour before staining too.

Michael,

I am amazed that you would go to all this work just to have a shop box to hold you bench chisels. Well, whatever your reason is, you are doing a beautiful job.

Oh no, only the prototype was destined to be a chisel box, the rest will be knife boxes or cremation urns or who knows what. :)

I'm putting this project to bed (might be one or three touch ups to do). Here's the completed boxes... finally!
Thanks for sticking around til the end.

Edit. Oh I forgot to mention about the blank knife decks - so they aren't quite finished, but that will happen when a client provides a cutlery set.

Cheers
Michael

Awesome job. I was at Winterthur a few weeks ago and saw at least one on display and after following this thread I think at some point I'd like to do one.

Again, you did an awesome job on your knife boxes.

If you're asking anything less than a grand each for these, you're out of your pea pickin' mind! :D
