Are you interested in getting together with fellow woodworkers in VA/NC?

So are we! We need your help. A new Chapter of the 207 is forming up and we need members, are you willing to make this jump. Professionals and Amateurs alike are welcome. Be willing to share your tips, techniques, jokes, and BBQ recipes!

If interested send a PM to either myself (barrydaniel) or Chris Haycox (chaycox).

Thanks.

Well we had our first meeting of the SE VA/NE NC meeting this past weekend. We met at Chris's shop. We worked on a ball and claw carving. It was a great time.

Topics of discussion included:
  • The folks at the local retail shop, think if you don't do it their way, it's wrong.
  • Road trip to Hertford to the Hobbs' in Feb.
  • And the big one, we are both apprehensive to tackle projects that are "difficult". Meaning something that would envolve alot of veneer, stringing, etc...

Although, I must say Chris is cheap. It was like 40 degrees in his shop and he didn't even turn on the heat until after I had icicles hanging from my nose. And when he did turn it on he was hogging all the heat.

And I must admit, I made doubly sure I brought over my dullest chisels to carve with.

had a great time working on the b&c leg, just extreme trouble for me to visualize it in the rough. It's no lie that I am cheap! The question in my mind is, should I spend money on heat, or spend money on wood. I did hog the heat, I have more mass than Barry!! He is tall and skinny and I am short and stout! Since the meeting I have been doing some carving on a practice finial for a 4 poster bed, what do you think? I will be finishing the facet carving on the pineapple tonight...I hope!

The pineapple is looking good. You may want to re-think your statements. Yea, I'll give you that I'm tall, but skinny:?:?:? More like huge wall of flesh.

I haven't had a chance to work on the carving. I'm going to retrace the pattern and only clip off the claw versus taking out that much material when I saw it out.

I looking forward to heading to Charlottesville on sunday. I might try to get there early on sunday so I can go to Monticello. I know I'll have to haul back here tuesday night for wednesday at Cal's.

not much of a lightweight here, Barry! Got most of the facets carved, total of 4 hours to this point.

Tommy,
No thank you!!!!! Thanks for giving us woodworkers a place to learn and explore the craft. A place where we can meet other woodworkers and learn from each other.

That trip to the Hobbs was being in the right place at the right time. The fun of watching a family of woodworkers get together and produce something was incredible. I hate to get sentimental, but my brother and I will never have the relationship these guys had with there Dad. Awe inspiring.
