Tommy MacDonald

After a long career as a carpenter, Tommy sustained a career-ending injury while working on Boston's Big Dig. Forced to find a new line of work, Tommy rediscovered his passion for woodworking and furniture making and poured himself into the craft. His workshop in Canton, Mass now plays host to fellow woodworkers and show guests and it's where Tommy turns out piece after piece of inspired furniture for the show.

As host of WGBH's new television series, Rough Cut – Woodworking with Tommy Mac, Tommy strives to be a responsible steward of his craft and to share his passion and knowledge with a new generation of woodworkers. More About Tommy »

Eli Cleveland

Native Atlantan Eli Cleveland is the production assistant on the new WGBH series Rough Cut - Woodworking with Tommy Mac. Eli graduated from Pace Academy in Atlanta in 2001. While earning his math degree at the University of Georgia, Eli began teaching himself furniture making. After graduation he was accepted into the internationally recognized North Bennet Street School in Boston's North End. Eli has worked with Tommy on a variety of projects, including a podcasting series for the web.

Steve Brown

Steve Brown is the head of the Cabinet and Furniture Making Department at the North Bennet Street School. He is also a 1990 graduate of the school. Steve was hired to teach in the school's workshop program at its inception in '92 and developed several of the courses. During this time, Steve worked full time for Phil Lowe—a 1974 NBSS graduate and founder of the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts—in Beverly, Mass., making new furniture and restoring antiques until he was hired to teach full-time in the NBSS furniture program. Steve's restoration work is included in the collections of museums and private clients and includes Ralph Lauren's 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe, which was the center-piece of Speed, Style, and Beauty: Cars from the Ralph Lauren Collection at Boston's MFA. He has lectured and given demonstrations at the MFA in Boston, SPNEA (now Historic New England), and Winterthur Museum in Delaware among other organizations. He has also contributed articles to Fine Woodworking magazine. Steve has a BA in Philosophy from Gordon College in Wenham, Mass. and lives in Manchester, Mass. with his wife, Peggy and sons, Jake and Noah.

Al D'Attanasio

Al D'Attanasio, the father of three daughters and two granddaughters, has been an avid woodworker for over forty years. Sawdust runs in his veins. The family owned and ran the local lumberyard where he worked throughout his high school and college years. Holder of an undergraduate and a graduate degree in education, he has served as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal during his 35 plus years in education. The opportunity to be the evening school director allowed him time to teach woodworking and furniture re-finishing - further fueling his passion.
